Introduction to a Careful Timber Harvest Saturday, March 1, 2008 (snow date March 8) 9am - 1pm HOWARD TREE FARM, Croydon/Grantham NH Moderate Hiking
Join us for a late winter forestry workshop at the site of an active timber harvest. How are trees selected, marked and cut during timber harvesting operations? What are typical price ranges for timber depending on tree species, quality, products, access to viable markets and site operability and logging costs? What are basic considerations in laying out timber access roads, skid trails and landings?
A winter timber harvest by professional logging contractor Arthur Cutter Logging and Landclearing and professional forester Jeremy Turner of Meadowsend Timberlands Ltd. will take place on Howard Tree Farm, a 139-acre third generation family owned property. The harvest is carried out by utilizing both the art and science of forest silviculture. Timber stand improvement prescriptions for pine, hemlock, spruce and maple stands will be designed to thin and favor desirable crop trees, remove poor quality stems and high risk trees, create openings and employ group and individual tree selection techniques to establish regeneration and favor valuable crop trees, seed trees and protect biological legacies. In addition to logging and forestry concepts, other topics related to the Howard Tree Farm, such as moose biology and land conservation will be explored.
This workshop is sponsored by the Forest Society, Meadowsend Timberlands Ltd., UNH Cooperative Extension and co-sponsored by the Grantham Conservation Commission.
